The cycle below describes the general graphics improvement process in games that has occurred for many years. As new hardware or a new console generation slowly reaches market saturation, the number of addressable sockets with next-generation capable graphics features increases.

DirectX Raytracing DXR brings a new level of graphics realism to video games, previously only achievable in the movie industry.
The effects achievable by DXR feel more real, because in a sense they are more real: DXR traces paths of light with true-to-life physics calculations, which is a far more accurate simulation than the heuristics based calculations used previously. Scenarios with many complex shaders will run better with dynamic-shader-based raytracing, as opposed to using massive inline raytracing uber-shaders.
If the above all seems quite complicated, well, it is! The high-level takeaway is that both the new inline raytracing and the original dynamic-shader-based raytracing are valuable for different purposes. As of DXR 1. Hybrid approaches are aided by the fact that both flavors of DXR raytracing share the same acceleration structure format, and are driven by the same underlying traversal state machine.

Mesh Shaders give developers more programmability than ever before. By bringing the full power of generalized GPU compute to the geometry pipeline, mesh shaders allow developers to build more detailed and dynamic worlds than ever before.
Prior to mesh shader, the GPU geometry pipeline hid the parallel nature of GPU hardware execution behind a simplified programming abstraction which only gave developers access to seemingly linear shader functions.
For instance, the developer writes a vertex shader function that is called once for each vertex in a model, implying serial execution. However, behind the scenes, the hardware packs adjacent vertices to fill a SIMD wave, then executes 32 or 64 vertex shader functions in parallel on a single shader core. This model has worked extremely well for many years, but it is leaving performance and flexibility on the table by hiding the details of what the hardware is really doing from developers.
Mesh shaders change this by making geometry processing behave more like compute shaders. Rather than a single function that shades one vertex or one primitive, mesh shaders operate across an entire compute thread group, with access to group shared memory and advanced compute features such as cross-lane wave intrinsics that provide even more fine grained control over actual hardware execution. Typically there will be a phase of the mesh shader where each thread is working on a separate vertex, then another phase where each thread works on a separate primitive — but this model is completely flexible allowing data to be shared across threads, new vertices or primitives created as needed, existing primitives clipped or culled, etc.
Along with this new flexibility of thread allocation comes a flexibility of input data formats. Mesh shader no longer uses the Input Assembler block, which was previously responsible for fetching index and vertex data from memory. Instead, shader code is free to read whatever data is needed from any format it likes. This enables novel new techniques such as index buffer compression, or the use of multiple different index buffers for different channels of vertex data. Such approaches can reduce memory usage and also reduce the memory bandwidth used during rendering, thus boosting performance.
Although more flexible than the previous geometry pipeline, the mesh shader model is also much simpler:. Along with mesh shader comes an optional new shader stage called the Amplification Shader.
This runs before the mesh shader, runs some computations, determines how many mesh shader thread groups are needed, and then launches that many mesh shaders:. Amplification shaders are especially useful for culling, as they can determine which meshlets are visible, testing each set of between triangles against a geometric bounding volume, normal cone, or more advanced techniques such as portal visibility planes, before deciding whether to launch a mesh shader thread group for that meshlet.
Previously, culling was typically performed on a coarser per-mesh level to decide whether to draw an object at all, and also on a finer per-triangle level at the end of the geometry pipeline. You can easily apply masks to objects in your video—from pets and cars, to drones, and more.

Pinnacle Studio: Video Editing Software & Screen Recorder
Pinnacle Studio has documentation as well, but it is only on their website, and that sucks. Additionally, CyberLink’s PowerDirector is a native bit application, and it takes full advantage of my hardware. In contrast, Corel’s Pinnacle Studio 17 is a bit application, and it doesn’t take full advantage of my hardware. With that nonsense turned off, the monitoring agent will still be running, and eating up some of your RAM, but at least it won’t be causing your system to freeze.
Another annoyance of Pinnacle Studio 17, is that it installs a DRM watchdog application, NeroCheck, on your system without asking you unless you actually read their 50 page user agreement in their term of use at install , that will run constantly on your system. I find it hilarious that clueless companies like Corel are still trying to use DRM as a means to control copying their software, these people have no concept of reality.
Newsflash guys, it doesn’t work, has never worked, and all you are doing is aggravating your paying users, while the pirates continue pirating. But, all of that being said, the key question is, can I get it to do what I need it to do?
And the answer is, yes! Once the “Watchfolders” are turned off, the application is surprisingly useable, and pretty darn responsive. You can import your videos into a project without having to actually copy the files , and you can preview them VERY smoothly. Editing them was no problem for me, and exporting them was a breeze. I did a trial edit, compile, and export to AVI, MOV and FLV format, at various settings, bit-rates, sizes, and custom settings, and the exported videos all came out very nicely.
I then did a trial edit, compile and export to DVD with chapter breaks and a title screen, etc. Even faster than CyberLink’s PowerDirector, which is saying something. But, it did the job well in all of my tests once I turned off its most annoying “features” and I have seen and used far worse. It is better than 3 stars, but it isn’t good enough to rate 4 stars, so I have to officially rate it 3 stars, but my 3.
Ulead is now part of Corel, and is sold as Corel VideoStudio. When consumer digital video cameras came to market, users needed capture cards and software to import the video. Capture cards typically came bundled with software for capturing, editing and producing video in DVD and other formats.
That product has evolved quite a bit, and is still a good choice. Pinnacle evolved quite a bit too, and this version is a departure from previous versions. I never used version 16, but compared to version 15 and below, this version has a substantially different interface.
Its old one was centered around the paradigm of the steps mentioned above, which was common for Video Studio and also for Cyberlink Power Director. Others such as Sony took a fresh approach, and this is a fresh approach for Pinnacle. The new interface is cleaner and more powerful. I can now edit far more video tracks, rendering is much faster, and many features have been added. Unfortunately, while video editing software seemed to be the last software product around that still came with a hard copy manual, Corel has dropped it for both this and Video Studio.
I suppose if you have a Kindle, you can get by with the PDF, but you most likely want your full computer screen for running the product itself. I found the PDF manual to be lacking, and some very simple things are not documented.
Thus the learning curve was greater than I expected, even though once I learned it, it was easy to use. The newest features are useful and practical, but there is also an increasing array of features that go far beyond what I’ll ever need.
In past versions, I often failed to see why I need hundreds of new transitions and more title backgrounds than I’d care to look at when I’ll only use a handful, but if you are looking for a special title slide or want to have effects similar to the wipes, fades, pans, folds and spins of an over the top sports broadcast, you can do that too.
The product is still well suited for getting those old Digital8 or MiniDV tapes off the shelf and putting them on line, but it’s even better suited to giving you the features necessary to work with your full HD videos and render things in any popular format or burn to a Blu-ray disc. It will also handle 3D videos. It won’t handle subtitles the way Cyberlink will and you’d have to rely on standard titles for that. But the interface is much cleaner than something like Cyberlink’s, which tries to upsell itself.
I’ve found it particularly useful when multiple video cameras are used at the same event and I wish to cut from one angle to another but have a cohesive video with no breaks in action or dialog. But the same editing capabilities come in handy even with lesser quality video, and my video review shows how I was able to salvage bits and pieces of videos to come up with something better.
Whether you merely want to take a collection of video clips and put them together, adding transitions and little more, or whether you want to edit multiple videos together with fancy titles rolling credits and Blu-Ray disc menus with a different moving background for each scene selection, you can do it with this product.
I wouldn’t go so far as to call it the ultimate in video editing because there are a few features that it lacks. It could be frustrating to learn how to do some things, so I suggest you seek out some on-line videos if you need help. I have significant professional video editing experience using Avid and have taught video production and editing workshops, but I won’t be reviewing Pinnacle Studio 17 Ultimate on that criterion but rather as an everyday user who wants to create fun, interesting and studio -quality videos using a consumer camcorder, DSLR or smartphone.

My experience so far in using this app has been very positive. It is based on the tried and true Avid engine and has a surprising amount of power for the price, yet is usable on most modern home desktop computers. The user interface will look familiar to anyone who has used most brands of video editing software I currently have 6 other brands of video editing software installed and was able to begin using Pinnacle Studio 17 Ultimate almost immediately.
Someone who has never used any type of video editing software will likely be overwhelmed. What makes Pinnacle Studio 17 Ultimate especially attractive for the price is the inclusion of a LOT of special effects, some of which were rarely found outside of pro studios until now.
They can add a whole new dimension to your projects. It does a lot and is very easy to use and it as the benefit of being launched as a stand-alone tool for cleaning up those old records and tapes. I had no problems installing the software and it has been running relatively stable. My only very small issue is that as soon as you insert the disk they require personal information from you before you can even install the software. That seems needlessly invasive.
Bottom line – from my experience, reading reviews about video editing software is like reading reviews about food Editing is both a craft and an art and not every software program is the right choice for everyone. I think this one, after spending some time with it, is one of the most capable in its price category.
